The DR Congo has several hiking trails one may decide to follow, but due to the fact that the tourism industry in the country is still underdeveloped, the most secure hiking trail is climbing mount Nyiragongo. Standing at an elevation of 3,470 metres, mount Nyiragongo is an active strato volcano in the Virunga mountains. Being in the virunga national park, travelers usually start with a Congo gorilla tour before proceeding to climb Mount Nyiragongo. Mount Nyiragongo is by far one of the most beautiful volcanoes with a 1.2 km diameter summit caldera containing the world’s most active and largest lava lake. The most recent eruption of mount Nyiragongo occurred in 2011.
