Detailed Itinerary for 17 Days Uganda, Rwanda & Kahuzi Biega Safari

Day 1: Arrival in Uganda and Transfer to Hotel

 Depending on your time of arrival at Entebbe International Airport, transfer to your hotel for dinner and overnight stay at your hotel.

Day 2: Transfer to Murchison Falls National Park

You will enjoy an early breakfast and start on the long drive to Murchison Falls National Park with a stopover at Zziwa Rhino Sanctuary for rhino tracking and lunch in Masindi town. Proceed to Murchison falls arriving in the afternoon and drive to Top of the Falls where you will have a close-up view of the renowned ‘Murchison Falls.’

This is the largest park in Uganda, covering almost 4000 km2, and is one of the most spectacular parks in all of Africa. There are the incredible falls from which the park takes its name, rugged savannah, dense woodland and spectacular wildlife. Check in to your hotel, relax, have dinner and overnight stay at your hotel/lodge.

Day 3: Morning Game Drive and Afternoon Boat

A full day of game viewing at Murchison; begin with a morning game drive, on the lookout for elephant, buffalo, giraffe, antelope, lion, leopard, and jackal. If luck is really on our side, we may encounter one of Murchison’s few cheetahs.

In the afternoon, you will take a boat trip to the base of the 43m high falls. This is also a good opportunity to spot a few of Murchison’s 460 bird species including the shoebill stork and goliath heron. You will also see one of Africa’s densest hippo and crocodile populations. Dinner and overnight at your hotel/lodge.

Day 4: Transfer to Kibale National Park

You will have breakfast and then drive to Kibale. En route, you will visit the amabere ganyinamwiru stalagmites and waterfalls site in Fort Portal and the crater lakes. Have lunch and proceed to Kibale arriving late afternoon. Dinner and overnight stay at your hotel/lodge.

Day 5: Chimpanzee Trekking and Transfer to Queen Elizabeth National Park

Take early morning breakfast and go for a briefing and start chimpanzee trekking. Kibale Forest National Park is one of the best safari destinations in Africa for chimpanzee tracking. Kibale’s 795km2 National Park contains one of the most beautiful and with the most varying tracts of tropical forest in the whole of Uganda. This is place to a number of forest wildlife, most especially 13 species of primate coupled with chimpanzees.

After trekking you will have lunch. Later transfer to Queen Elizabeth national park. Dinner and overnight at your hotel/lodge.

Day 6: Lion Tracking Experience/Game Drive and Launch Cruise

After breakfast, you will set off for an early morning breakfast to catch up with the lion tracking experience which will be followed by a game drive safari. Expect lots of animals including; elephants, Lions, buffaloes, waterbucks, warthogs, Uganda kobs among others.

You will then visit Omwani Women’s Coffee Cooperative for a coffee plantation tour and learn about the different stages of coffee and return to Mweya for lunch. After lunch, you will enjoy an afternoon boat cruise on the Kazinga Channel for a number of hippos, crocodiles, buffaloes, and several water birds. Dinner and overnight stay at your hotel/lodge.

Day 7: Transfer to Bwindi impenetrable National park

In the morning after breakfast, you will embark on a transfer to Bwindi’s impenetrable forest via the Ishasha sector which gives you a chance of seeing the tree-climbing lions at a closer range. Continue to Bwindi with lunch en route and arrive in the evening for, check in the lodge and relax. Dinner and overnight stay at your hotel/lodge.

Day 8: Gorilla trekking

After an early morning breakfast, you will head to the park headquarters for briefing, immediately you will be directed to enter the forest with the park rangers leading in search for the gorillas. This will take you about 2- 8 hours depending on the movement of the gorilla in the wild, meet and stay with the gorillas for a maximum of one hour, then you will return and relax at the lodge. Dinner and overnight stay at your hotel/lodge.

Day 9: Transfer to Volcanoes National park (Rwanda) & Ibyi’ wacu Village Tour

Wake up for a transfer to Volcanoes national park. The drive goes through the beautiful country side and peoples homesteads along with dramatic views of the Virunga Volcanoes. On arrival at Ruhengeri, check into at your selected lodge for lunch. Later in the evening, you will drive to the Ibyi’ wacu village for a cultural tour where you will get an  opportunity to dance and sing alongside the popular intore dance troupe as you get to learn more about the interesting Rwandan culture. Dinner and overnight stay at your hotel/lodge.

Day 10: Golden monkey tracking and nature walk to Twin Lakes

On the 10th day of your 17 Days Uganda, Rwanda & Kahuzi Biega Safari , After an early morning breakfast, transfer to the park headquarters for briefing and later enter the forest and hike while in search of the golden monkeys. Tracking the golden monkeys rewards views of other primates such as the black and white Colobus monkeys, and Olive baboons among others. In the afternoon, enjoy a nature walk to the twin lakes. Dinner and overnight stay at your hotel/lodge.

 Day 11: Transfer to Lake Kivu and Afternoon Boat Cruise

Wake up at leisure for breakfast and check out of your hotel and drive towards Gisenyi for your Lake Kivu visit. This is a 2 to 3-hour road transfer. You will drive straight to Lake Kivu for a boat trip and have lunch at the lake shores. Spend the day enjoying the breeze and scenery while reading a book or swimming.

You will later connect to check into your hotel at Gisenyi where you will have dinner and spend the night. Dinner and overnight stay at your preferred hotel.

Day 12: Transfer to Nyungwe forest National Park

After breakfast, embark on a 6-7 hours’ drive to Nyungwe Forest National Park with lunch en route. It is a scenic drive that goes through people’s homesteads and different hills of Rwanda – the land of a thousand hills. Arrive in the afternoon. Dinner and overnight stay at your hotel/lodge.

 Day 13: Tropical Water fall hike and Canopy walk

Have breakfast at your lodge and drive to the park headquarters. Nyungwe National Park has over 19 trails that you can explore. Today you will be doing a tropical waterfall hike with an opportunity to hike to either Isumo or Ndambarare waterfalls depending on which one you prefer. Hiking excursions take between 3-4 hours depending on the trail you will be taking and your pace. In the afternoon, you will have a canopy walk in the forest or where you will view other primates from the top of the forest. Dinner and overnight stay at your hotel/lodge.

 Day 14:  Coffee Tour

On the 14th day of your 17 Days Uganda, Rwanda & Kahuzi Biega Safari ,  Wake up in the morning and have a relaxed breakfast meal at your lodge. You will then check out and meet up with your driver guide. If you wish, you may head out for a coffee tour to Huye Mountain Coffee Cooperative and get to tour coffee plantations. You will also be taken through the entire process of how coffee is made in Rwanda and conclude your tour with a nice cup of Rwanda-made coffee. Return back to your lodge for lunch and spend the rest of the afternoon relaxing at leisure.

Later have dinner and overnight stay the same as above.

15: Transfer to Bukavu and Optional Visit to Lwiro Sanctuary.

After you have had breakfast at your lodge, you will check out of your hotel and meet up with your driver guide. You will embark on about an hour’s drive to the Congo border at Cyangugu where you will check in at immigration and later meet our Congo driver guide. Drive to your hotel in Bukavu in time to check in and have lunch. If you wish, you can do an optional visit to Lwiro Sanctuary where you will visit orphaned and rescued chimpanzees and other primates. Alternatively, you can do an optional tour of Bukavu town where you will visit historical and cultural sites in the city.

Dinner and overnight stay at your preferred hotel.

16: Lowland Gorilla Trek in Kahuzi Biega NP and Cross to Cyangungu

In the morning, you will head for the memorable adventure of tracking the lowland gorillas in Kahuzi Biega National Park. Tacking lowland Gorillas is very amazing, lowland Gorillas differ from mountain gorillas, the lowland gorillas are bigger in size, usually takes 1-4 hours to track the lowland Gorillas. The lowland Gorillas stay in bigger families as compared to mountain gorillas; you will not regret the safari effort once you meet the amazing Gorillas! After your gorilla trek, you will have lunch and cross back into Rwanda via the Cyangugu border, arriving in time to check in at your hotel for dinner and an overnight stay at your hotel/lodge.

Day 17: Transfer Back to Kigali and Departure.

On the 17th day of your 17 Days Uganda, Rwanda & Kahuzi Biega Safari , Wake up at leisure and have breakfast at your hotel. Today you will be driving back to Kigali city with a stopover for lunch and also visit the King’s Palace in Nyanza and National Museum in Butare. Drop-off will be at a hotel of your choice in Kigali City or Kigali International Airport if you have a late-night flight to catch back home. End of Safari.
