Where gorilla trekking is carried out

Gorilla trekking in Uganda can be carried out in 2 national parks Bwindi Impenetrable National Park where they can be carried out in the four sectors of the park namely; Rushaga, Nkuringo, Buhoma and Ruhija where a tourist can find the different Uganda gorilla families in order to participate in gorilla trekking. Gorilla trekking can also be carried out in Mgahinga National Park along the slopes of the different Virunga Mountains in the park namely Mount Sabyinyo, Mount Gahinga, and Mount Muhabura

Price of a gorilla trekking permit

For tourists to participate in gorilla trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga national park, the tourists should book for a gorilla trekking permit in Uganda from a trusted tour company or from the Uganda Wildlife Authority at a fee of 600USD however the price of the permit will increase to 700USD on 1st July 2020 therefore if you’re interested in taking part in gorilla trekking, you should book in advance in order not to miss out on the amazing experience of gorilla trekking in Uganda.

What involves in gorilla trekking

Gorilla trekking in Uganda involves tourists hiking the different trails in the park in order to track the habituated Uganda gorilla families in the different national parks. Before carrying out gorilla trekking, you will participate in a briefing session where you will be told the rules and regulations, the guidelines to follow while in the presence of the different gorilla families in the park.  After the briefing session, tourists will be ready to participate in gorilla trekking where they will embark on their journey to the different hiking trails in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga National Park in order to access the gorilla families.

 Once they access the families, tourists will spend an hour with the gorilla family which will give you the opportunity to understand their behaviour in the wild, how they co-exist with one another, their feeding patterns, how they construct their nests among other interesting features about the gorillas in the park. Gorilla trekking in Mgahinga National Park involves hiking the virunga mountains in the bamboo trees along the slopes of virunga mountains where you will see a number of attractions in the park like a number of monkey species like the black and white colobus monkey, the vervet monkeys, the golden monkeys an endangered primate species and a number of exceptional views making the activity rewarding and hence memorable Uganda safaris.

Gorilla trekking guidelines 

While participating in gorilla trekking in Uganda, there are a number of guidelines that are to be followed in order to have a safe and amazing time during your Uganda tour and among the different guidelines that should be followed during the activity and these include the following;

  • A distance of 7 metres should be kept to avoid contracting diseases to the primates
  • Unnecessary movements and noises should be avoided during encounters with the gorillas to avoid triggering them as a threat.
  • You should avoid eating food in the presence of the gorillas to avoid contracting diseases to gorilla families.
  • Smoking in the presence of the gorillas is not allowed.
  • Taking pictures of the gorillas with a flash is not allowed.
  • Sharing foodstuffs with the gorillas is not allowed because it can spread diseases among the gorillas. 
  • Trackers under the age of 15 are not allowed to participate in the activity of gorilla trekking
  • You are supposed to spend only one hour with the gorillas.
  • Sick people are not advised to come in contact with the primates in order to avoid contracting diseases.
  • Littering in the park should be avoided to avoid accidents.
  • Only eight people are allowed to trek a particular gorilla family.

Packing list for gorilla trekking

  • Hiking shoes for easy mobility while in the park
  • Long sleeved trousers and shirts to avoid being pricked by nettles
  • Insect repellents to avoid insect bites which can be irritating during gorilla trekking in the park.
  • Water bottle in case you get thirsty because the hike to the different gorilla families can be tiresome.
  • Pain killers because gorilla trekking in Uganda can be tiresome since it involves hiking the Virunga Mountains which can cause joint pain.
  • Camera to capture the gorilla s during their 
  • You can also carry Binoculars because during gorilla trekking in Uganda in the different national parks you will see a number of bird species.
